SOMCAN hosts a State of SoMa gathering to facilitate dialogue about healthy neighborhood growth.

Above and right: SOMCAN hosts a "State of SoMa" gathering to facilitate dialogue about healthy neighborhood growth.

Ensuring that SoMa remains a healthy neighborhood for all.

The SoMa neighborhood has undergone dramatic changes over the years, most notably in the areas of land use planning and development, which has resulted in gentrification. To prevent the displacement of SoMa's low-income and working-class residents, SOMCAN's Healthy Neighborhoods program aims to encourage the community to go beyond the fight against gentrification by supporting a vision of self-determination for all. By fostering awareness, educational resources and leadership capabilities for all SoMa residents, SOMCAN strives to promote the long-term sustainability of low-income, immigrant, people of color and working-class residents in the neighborhood.

The goals of SOMCAN's Healthy Neighborhoods program include:

  • Increasing awareness of the impact of neighborhood development to the long time residents of SoMa
  • Supporting the development of a Youth & Family Zone in SoMa
  • Increasing the visibility of SOMCAN's work in the areas of health and land use to both the community as well as funders
  • Educating residents about healthy land uses
