Providing direct services and community organizing skills for families.
In an effort to more fully empower SoMa families, SOMCAN combines direct services with community organizing education. Establishing a collective voice is hard to accomplish when families are faced with everyday issues such as affordable housing, job searches and childcare. However, SOMCAN believes that the everyday struggle of families will not cease until the community achieves social justice and equity led by those who are most impacted.
SOMCAN's Low-Income Family Program is designed to provide direct services to SoMa low-income families by providing them with:
- School support
- Job referrals
- Housing support and referrals
- Other referral services
SOMCAN also strives to build leadership skills for parents, enabling them to address their issues and needs to support a healthy livelihood for their families. This is accomplished by:
- Conducting educational workshops to help parents build their leadership skills
- Getting parents actively involved in various SoMa neighborhood and city-wide campaigns
- Raising funds to support parent leadership, outreach and referral programs
- Increasing awareness of the program to new parents through outreach
