S/Heroes In Our Windows II
SOMCAN’s Reclaiming Our Space (ROSe) Art Unveiling was an evening to celebrate and pay tribute to Filipino culture, legacy, and history.
In partnership with the Children's Creativity Museum, Metreon, Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy, and artist Mel Vera Cruz, we held a ribbon-cutting and unveiling of the “S/Heroes in Our Windows II” mural.
We are honored to share the life and stories of: Amado Khaya Canham, Robyn Rodriguez, Lorna Velasco, Bernadette Sy, Lolita Kintanar, Oscar Penaranda, Anastacia "Tess" Diaz, Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales, Luisa Antonio, Juvy Barbonio, Tony Remington, Emil De Guzman, MC Canlas, Teresita “Tetet” Naval, Father Obet, Phil Chavez, Daz Lamparas, Juanita Tamayo Lott, Alice Bulos, Steve Arevalo, Rosita Tabasa, Jen Ortega-Lapena, Estella Habal, Leni Juarez, Anita Sanchez, Alleluia Panis, Rizalino "Ross" Quema, Lillian Galedo, Mrs. Herminia Gorre, Shirley & Pat Mingming, Felix Junia, Eric Fructouso, Mike "Dream" Francisco, Marie Romero, and Pio Candelaria.
You can check out the artwork on the outside of 4th St. and Howard Street. We highly recommend also coming in the weekend to experience the spiral window from the inside. The museum is open Saturday + Sunday from 10am to 12:30pm and 1:30pm to 4pm
The artwork will be up until Jan. 2022
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Mel Vera Cruz’s mixed media stencil mural will feature 35 s/heroes that have impacted the Filipino community as organizers, veterans, seniors, mothers, workers, farmers, professionals, and residents. Their everlasting work & contributions continue to position Filipino-American life as an inextricable part of the story of San Francisco, the Bay Area and/or the South of Market. “S/Heroes In Our Windows II” is a project dedicated to the leaders and legacies that has helped build, empower, engage, and continue to inspire our communities ongoing contribution for a just society.
